An Old Lady's Poem

What do you see, nurses, what do you see?
What are you thinking when you're looking at me?
A crabby old woman, not very wise,
Uncertain of habit, with faraway eyes?
Who dribbles her food and makes no reply
When you say in a loud voice, "I do wish you'd try!"
Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe ....
Who, resisting or not, lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill..!
Is that what you're thinking? Is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse; you're not looking at me.

I'll tell you who I am as I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of ten with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters who love one another.
A young girl of sixteen, with wings on her feet,
Dreaming that soon now a lover she'll meet.
A bride soon at twenty -- my heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows that I promised to keep.
At twenty-five now, I have young of my own,
Who need me to guide, and a secure happy home.
A woman of thirty, my young now growing fast,
Bound to each other with ties that should last.

At forty, my young sons have grown and are gone,
But my man's beside me to see I don't mourn.
At fifty once more, babies play round my knee,
Again we know children, my loved one and me.
Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead;
I look at the future, I shudder with dread.
For my young are all rearing young of their own,
And I think of the years and the love that I've known.
I'm now an old woman ....and nature is cruel;
'Tis a jest to make old age look like a fool.
The body, it crumbles, grace and vigour depart,
There is now a stone where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells,
And now and again my battered heart swells.
I remember the joys, I remember the pain,
And I'm loving and living life over again.
I think of the years ....all too few, gone too fast,
And accept the stark fact that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, nurses, open and see,
Not a crabby old woman; look closer ...see ME!!

Remember this poem when you next meet an old person who you might brush aside without looking at the young soul within...
We will one day be there, too!

A Nurses Reply

Dear little old lady, it's easy to see,
you know about you but not about me.

You think I am here for the profit and gain,
surrounded by aging and sickness and pain.

For you see here a woman, efficient and terse
with a neat little pin that proclaims she's a nurse.

And you look in my eyes to find out what I see,
but you too are neglecting to learn about me.

I know you are lonely and frightened and ill,
but you don't understand when I offer my skill.

And you don't realize that I want you to live
and I'm willing to help and to work and to give...

You wouldn't believe that each patient I see
is a projected picture of what I will be...

And you don't understand when I have to say "no"
that it isn't so easy although it won't show.

Or when pain is a part of the things I must do,
that pain is for me as well as for you.

I, too, am a woman--a maiden or wife,
with my even share of the burdens of life.

If I'm able to comfort or bring you a smile,
my day is complete and my job is worthwhile.

I bring you my hands and my head and my heart,
the gift of my nursing, my skill and my art.
Don't turn me away and don't hold back your trust,
for your faith in my love is an absolute must.

I will look at you always and ever will see,
not a crabbit old lady...just an extension of me.

I honour the place in you where the entire universe resides.
I honour the place in you of love, of truth, of peace, of light.
I bow to your divine spirit, to your Buddha hood, to the great
ball of sunshine that radiates from your heart.

I believe in you!!!!!!

I know that there are great things
Out there for you and it's within your
Power to make them happen.

I have seen so many of your strengths.
I admire your wisdom, courage, wit and
Loving nature.

I believe in you and know you have what it
Takes to follow your dreams.

I took a look into my heart
I took a look into my heart;
I wondered what I’d see,
I saw a reflection of myself;
but I was you,
and you was me.

Positive thoughts

We can create harmony in our relationships and
surroundings by focusing our thoughts, settings
and intention, and taking positive action.
Choosing to think positive thoughts develop
meaningful relationships and create serenity,
harmony and beauty in our environment sets an
energy into motion that will multiply and reflect
back to us. We end up creating a wonderful cycle
of positive thoughts, until the cycle starts over
again. We simply need to set our intention and
take the first steps, hard as that sometimes can be.
Often moving means accepting some losses and this
can be the single factor that blocks that first step.
Faith in the notion that things will work out and
trust in yourself is a starting point.

Self worth

When we accept that we have worth and reflect.
We can begin to see that we do not have to chase
after life. When we are quiet and hold still, life
comes to us. When we take the time to appreciate what
we have and acknowledge that we were blind not to see,
life unfolds before us like a flower responding to
the rays of the sun.

Life's Obstacles

Life is like a big obstacle
you never know where to turn
everything you do in life
there's always something in return
and something else to learn
if you turn in the wrong direction
you might need a little protection
and if you turn in a different way
it will be to show someone your affections
life's obstacles can become very confusing
and can also be very amusing
they can also be abusing
So when life's obstacles come for you
don't try to refuse them.

If you think you can!

If you think you're beaten, you are,
If you think you dare not, you don't,
If you'd like to win, but think you can't,
It's almost for sure you won't
. If you think your losing, you've lost.
For out in the world we find
Success begins with a persons will,
It's all in the state of mind.
If you think you're outclassed, you are,
You've got to think high to rise.
You have to stay with it,
In order to win the prize.
Life's battles don't always go
To the one with the better plan,
More often than not, you will win
If you think you can.

Do not stand at my grave and weep

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow.
I am diamond glints in the snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am gentle autumnal rain.
When you waken in the morning hush,
I am the soft uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight,
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I, am not there, I did not die.

Cancer cannot take away our hopes or our dreams
I know it may seem to try constantly it seems
Our spirit must rise and fly high above the heavens
We must conquer this demon for that is a given
Should, at some point weakness invade
Our heart and soul must scream in a tirade
As we dig deep into the depths of our souls
We must remind ourselves of our dreams and goals
Our loved ones fight with us constantly by our side
Well, lets face it, we are in for one hell of a ride
Love has no limits, forever giving us strength
Let us win this battle we have been sent
The battle cry of hopes, dreams and love
Scream wildly in our minds with help from above
Cancer oh Cancer we shall not let you be victorious
For all that we are and ever will be
The heavens shall sing that personal song of victory
